Hardware recommendations:

Because computer hardware availability and pricing is changing on a daily basis, the information provided here is meant as a general guideline.

For those looking to purchase a new computer, most new computers have what a student needs to in order to be successful at Hiram College.

  • As we use OneDrive – local storage space is not as needed; and is personal preference. You will see higher speeds in a system with a Solid State Drive (SSD) over a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
  • 8GB of RAM or more is suggested
  • Intel Processor (i3 or higher recommended) or AMD Processor (Ryzen 3 or higher recommended)

If a student is looking to own a gaming computer, it is advised to upgrade the following:

  • Storage space
  • RAM or memory
  • video card/graphics card

Note: All computers must have a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Card and a Wireless Card installed to have network access.

Modems or routers are not to be used on campus; attempting to connect any of those devices to the network will result in damage to both your computer and the network equipment, for which you will be held responsible.

There is no need for students to bring their own printers, but they are allowed to bring those provided they plug those directly into their computer. Color prints or copies can be made in the campus Service Center or Library for a minimal fee. The Kennedy Center also has a computer lab in which you may print from two of the network printers installed there.

Finally, please review the Acceptable Use Policy. Failure to comply with the AUP may result in the restriction or removal of your campus network privileges.
